Watch out, America…
Bible believers, beware.
The Obama Administration has let it be known that they plan to join much of the rest of the United Nations in rebuking Israel on the floor of the UN in an upcoming session, over the building of settlements in Israel. The US, long Israel’s strongest and most faithful ally, now seems to be joining the rest of an Israel-hostile world by this latest move.
If this is followed through on, many who believe the words of the Bible fear America could fall under a curse, citing a passage in Numbers 24:5,9, which reads, “How beautiful are your tents, Jacob, your dwelling places, Israel! … May those who bless you be blessed and those who curse you be cursed!”
Some say such a move is necessary if the end of the present age is at hand. Time will tell the tale.
Of course, one could always think of more pleasant things, like purchasing cabinet hardware.
So-called “tax cut” bill is Stimulus III
The GOP needs to learn that not everything labeled a tax cut is a good thing, especially when proposed by a Democrat. That’s the moral of the story with President Obama’s flirtation with the GOP by offering a two-year extension of the so-called “Bush Tax Cuts.”
Set to expire on January 1, 2011, letting the cuts expire amounts to a huge tax increase on an already hurting economy. Obama knows keeping them going is big on the GOP wish list, so he’s offering the two-year extension in exchange for what amounts to a third Stimulus Bill.
And unfortunately, the GOP that took power in the house has no say in it; the current lame-duck Congress is still in power. It’s the kind of move that could make Obama look good and the GOP look bad, because they ran on an agenda that sets them against the very sort of spending bill this Stimulus Tax Cut bill represents. It’s stuffed to the gills with earmarks.
Of course, all the life insurance quotes in the world won’t turn a dime into a diamond; the best thing the GOP could do is call Obama’s bluff, reject the bill and call for an up-and-down vote on extending the tax cuts. As a lame duck Congress, what do they have to lose?
The crumbling of the Obama majority
A new Associated Press-Knowledge Networks poll suggests that the support base that placed Barak Obama in the White House only two years ago are crumbling. Fully one-half of those who voted for Obama have expressed interest in even voting in November, this time out. And of those who are voting, fully one-quarter of them are indicating they will be supporting the GOP or some other opposition candidate this time around.
This comes as Rasmussen Reports predicts a 55-seat shift in the House of Representatives, minimum, which would be plenty to place the GOP back in control of the House, as only 39 seats are necessary for a switch in Speaker. Voter dissatisfaction with real results in the economy is leading voters to “burn belly fat” in their voting habits and cut lose any incumbent who seems to be part of the problem.
If the GOP thinks it can ride dissatisfaction, return to power, and get away with mere status quo politics, however, they need to beware; that’s exactly what the Dems did four years ago in the House and Senate… and it didn’t last very long.
Obama, Dems will get it wrong again on oil
President Obama and other Democrats in tidy bow ties have jumped on the oil mess in the Gulf, headed by BP, as an opportunity to pull back on Obama’s promise to expand off-shore drilling. And once again, they form policy for all the wrong reasons.
Do oil companies like BP need to do better on safety precautions and contingency plans? You bet. But should we expect that nothing ever goes wrong? A bit unrealistic, that.
I for one simply refuse to believe that there’s any sort of nefarious plot on behalf of BP to pollute the Gulf. Does any reasonable person believe BP wants to be losing all those oil riches into the ocean? Of course not. It’s lost money… and a lot of it.
But is this incident any reason to call expanded off-shore drilling “dead on arrival,” as many Dems have? Absolutely not, because none of the important factors have changed.
The important factors are that other countries that are a lot further away from the Gulf than us are still drilling there; that we are far too dependent on other countries to supply our oil needs; that the less oil we produce domestically, the stronger the likelihood becomes that OPEC and other players can control our economy by controlling our oil prices.
Right now, Obama and the Dems are acting like the kid who falls over and skins a knee trying to ride a bike and vows never to ride a bike again. Is this thing in the Gulf terrible for the environment and a big, huge mess no one wants to see repeated? Absolutely.
But it’s not a reason to back off from off-shore drilling and thereby increasing our dependence on foreign markets to meet our oil needs.
